For generations of Tampa Bay Rays fans, however, the Trop was something more important.
It was where their baseball memories happened.
Before the Rays
One of the unusual things about Tropicana Field is that the building’s story began before the franchise’s.
The stadium was constructed while the region pursued Major League Baseball, years before the expansion Tampa Bay Devil Rays finally took the field.
When Major League Baseball eventually arrived in 1998, the building finally had the permanent major-league tenant the region had pursued.
An Unmistakable Ballpark
Nobody ever confused Tropicana Field with another major-league stadium.
The roof.
The artificial playing surface.
The catwalks.
The unusual ground rules.
The enclosed environment.
The Trop developed an identity entirely its own.
It could be criticized, defended, joked about and debated—sometimes during the same conversation.
But Memories Don’t Care About Architecture
Ballparks ultimately become important because of what happens inside them.
Rays fans watched a new franchise begin there.
They watched stars develop there.
They watched terrible teams gradually give way to contenders.
They watched playoff baseball there.
They watched the franchise reach heights that would have seemed almost impossible during its earliest seasons.
Those memories become part of a stadium’s history regardless of what anybody thinks about the building itself.
Part of Rays History
The story of Tropicana Field is complicated.
So is the story of baseball in Tampa Bay.
That’s precisely why it belongs in the Rays Encyclopedia.
A ballpark doesn’t need to be universally loved to matter.
For generations of Rays fans, this was where Tampa Bay baseball lived.
And that makes the Trop impossible to separate from the history of the Rays.
