Jennings’ pair of jacks lifts Rays past Tigers

Don’t bury the Rays just yet.

Perhaps the Zim Bear giveaway fired up the troops, maybe they just get up for big games — like when they’re facing a Justin Verlander — or, more than likely, the Rays might have just reached a point where they had had enough and finally decided to fire back. And fire back they did in an emotional 4-2 win over the Tigers on Friday at Tropicana Field with 19,557 watching.

“We looked more normal,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said. “More like how we’re supposed to look. I think the energy level was better. Why? I have no idea why. It was just a matter of getting over that weekend at Bernie’s in Kansas City and Philadelphia, it just got better. It was just a matter of time. We have great professionals right here. Cobb’s return propels Rays to Interleague win

Alex Cobb pitched in the Majors for the first time in nearly 10 months and Will Rhymes was back on the field Saturday after fainting on the field on Wednesday. The pair were critical in the Rays 5-2 win over the Braves in Interleague play at Tropicana Field.

The Rays are now 25-16 on the season as they head into the rubber game of the series on Sunday afternoon.

The teams with the two best records in the American League are face to face this weekend. The Tampa Bay Rays would like to make the point that there isn’t all that much distance between first and second.

The Rays held up their end of the argument on Friday night, defeating the Rangers, 8-4. The Rays (13-7) have been very good. The Rangers (15-5) had seemed semi-unbeatable, at least prior to Friday.

The Rays/Rangers match-up does not automatically ring bells as one of the game’s great rivalries, but lately, it’s been front and center. Tampa Bay has been a postseason qualifier three of the last four seasons, but Texas has won the AL pennant the last two. In both of those years, the Rangers eliminated the Rays in a Division Series.

Rays send Brignac to Triple-A

Following Friday night’s 5-4 loss to the Twins, the Rays optioned infielder Reid Brignac to Triple-A Durham.

The move paved the way for first baseman/outfielder Brandon Allen to be added to the Rays’ roster on Saturday.

Brignac was the Rays’ starting shortstop entering the 2011 season. But he struggled with the bat, and has continued to do so this season, as well.
